Bob reports from the field!  Check back here often to see what's happening!

The Cassowary is listed as an endangered species. Its estimated that there are less than 1,000 of these magnificent birds remaining in Australia. The number one threat to the Cassowary is destruction of habitat. Mission Beach is a special place where the rainforest grows right down to the sea and where you have the best chance to see a Cassowary in the wild. But time is running out for the Cassowaries at Mission Beach. Key rainforest sites must be secured now before they are developed for housing. Bob is supporting Rainforest Rescue's Mission Beach Cassowary Care Project which identifies and purchases rainforest habitat at risk of development and then protects it forever in a conservation reserve.

Southern Hairy Nosed Wombats
Portee Station Conservation Project

Acquisition of Portee Station, South Australia

The Wombat Awareness Organisation (WAO) is a non-profit organisation established to revolutionise the public perception of wombats, in doing so promoting their conservation and welfare.  All three types of wombat in Australia are facing imminent and devastating threats to their survival, and urgent action is needed to avoid yet another iconic native species joining the sickeningly long list of endangered wildlife in Australia.

Portee Station is a large parcel of land on the banks of the Murray River near Blanchetown, with extreme potential for furthering the conservation of Southern Hairy Nosed Wombats.   The property’s significance lies not only with its size and inhabitants, but also its connections to the already established flora and fauna sanctuaries:   Moorunde Wildlife Reserve, Brookfield Conservation Park and Yookamurra Sancturary.  The acquisition of Portee Station by the Wombat Conservation Fund – founded and managed by the Wombat Awareness Organisation – ensures the conservation of the Southern Hairy Nose Wombat in an area that will be of key importance for the conservation of all native wildlife and its habitat in South Australia.  The proposed site would secure the largest conservation area for wombats in Australia, and if purchased as a whole, extend the pre-existing protected land from 34,057 acres to an incredible 56,219 acres.
This project would become the largest independent wombat sanctuary in the world!

Initially, the Wombat Conservation Fund, on behalf of WAO and with my support, desire to obtain a 13,000acre portion of Portee Station adjoining Morrunde Wildlife Reserve; but they need your help!

Your donation of AUD$40 to the Wombat Conservation Fund, will go towards the purchase of one acre of Portee Station.   $80 will go towards the purchase of 2 acres of prime wombat territory...........$400 will go towards the purchase of 10 acres and ensure the wombat that lives within that area is protected from illegal culling and the devastating effects of drought and sarcoptic mange.  Pending the success of the initial campaign, the remaining land, homestead and farm buildings of Portee Station will be acquired and utilized as a research and rehabilitation centre for debilitated wombats, complimenting WAO’s existing Intensive Care Unit located closer to Adelaide.

I have been involved in the conservation of wombats for quite some time and firmly believe that
this project is our best chance to ensure the survival of this magnificent animal.  I urge all animal lovers to join me in helping to save this species.

--Bob Irwin

A $40 donation will go towards the purchase of an acre of Portee Stn, a burrow system, a home for up to 10 wombats.
